The Garden State implemented a mandatory recycling program requiring recycling of bottles, cans, newspaper and cardboard effective in June 2015. The program puts more comprehensive, county-specific measures in place for commercial organizations, including mandated recycling of various construction, automotive, and chemical materials.
Recognizing that waste disposal costs in New Jersey are among the highest in the nation and that food waste constitutes some 15 percent of the state’s waste stream, the N.J. DEP has also implemented grant funding that includes a food waste reduction initiative.
